Wedding flowers – Lydia and Jo, Coombe Lodge

The lovely Lydia and her now husband Jo tied the knot on 11th April 2019 at the beautiful wedding venue; Coombe Lodge in Blagdon on the outskirts of Bristol and they chose Isabloom Floral Design to be their chosen wedding florist on their big day.

I first met with Lydia back in November 2018 over a coffee. We talked all things weddings and flowers… of course! Lydia had quite a clear idea in her head of what she wanted for her wedding flower collection. Lydia also knew exactly what type of flowers she liked which was great. Brides often do not know the names of flowers they like as we are so used to just picking up flowers visually and not really taking notice of their names. It was lovely to hear of Lydia’s favourite flowers that she wanted to include on her wedding day and also inspire her with some new flower idea’s and letting her know what would work during the spring wedding season. I will only ever use fresh and seasonal blooms, so this always plays a very big part in a wedding consultation. By doing this I know the flowers are of the highest quality they can be and are not ridiculously overpriced having gone through some environmentally damaging processes.

Lydia was clear on her wedding flower colour scheme which was very simple and classic; white and greens. There was not a specific theme to the wedding, but they liked the more rustic style. The main blooms that we decided on were hydrangeas, roses, ranunculus and lots of populus eucalyptus as Lydia loved the silvery tone that it gave off. We also chose to include Lily of the Valley as it gives off such a wonderful scent. Lydia’s choice of flower were hydrangea which were one of her favourite flowers and I then introduced her to the ranunculus which are in bloom from November to May and we also decided on classic wedding roses. We agreed that nothing would be too structured and would have a natural feel to it with raw stems exposed.

Lydia would be having a bridal bouquet using her favourite hydrangeas framed with the populus eucalyptus and her bridesmaids would have a simpler version with just one hydrangea and some smaller blooms such as the roses, ranunculus and eucalyptus. Her maid of honour would have a slightly different bouquet with more hydrangea, a real mix of the both. The grooms party and mothers would be having button holes which were made up of roses, ranunculus buds, eucalyptus and the groom would have a stem of Lily of the Valley.

In terms of the wedding décor Lydia had hired a stylist to erect artificial trees so the only décor I would be providing were three barely there wreaths. In the main room at Coombe Lodge they have two beautiful fire places and also out in the lobby. The wreaths were created to hang above all three fireplaces. The wedding wreaths were rather large at 70cm each and were handcrafted using moss and twigs before half of them being decorated with foliage’s and some white blooms. I really enjoyed creating these wedding wreaths and they added so much to the room.

Straight after our consultation I sent Lydia a detailed quote on everything we had discussed and then Lydia proceeded to pay her 10% deposit to secure the date. The balance is always due just 1 month before the wedding.

After the initial wedding flower consultation which is always free of charge, me and Lydia kept in touch via message and email regarding things such as measurements she had to collect from the venue and any questions or queries, she may have had. During this time after the deposit is paid and the balance is due, I always allow a couple to make small changes, nothing is completely set in stone as people do often change their minds on certain things. Lydia and I then met again in late February where we ran through everything, confirmed a couple of things they had been thinking of and made a rough time plan of the morning together. With just over a month to go we were both very excited at this point.

One week before the wedding I placed the flower order and then two days before the preparation began with the wedding wreaths being created first, followed by all of the bouquets and button holes allowing time for the flowers to bloom. On the morning of the wedding it was a very simple set up for me. Whilst Lydia was upstairs with her bridal party I came in early and hung the wreaths before helping Lydia into her dress (I have experience in dressing brides!) and delivering the bouquets to the bride, her maid of honour and her bridesmaids which they really loved.

Congratulations Lydia and Jo, it was such a pleasure to be part of your wedding day and I really hope that you loved your wedding flowers from Isabloom Floral Design
